Getting a head start...

As a parent, I planned to homeschool. In my planning, I always thought that it would start when the oldest turned 4 or 5 years old. Well, looking back, it really began at birth. As they grew, they learned a lot of what can be called "number sense." A child's first exposure to math should be to understand "one to one correspondence," which means to associate an object with each number. For example, counting out forks and spoons from the dishwasher to set the table would help a child intuitively gain understanding of this concept.  When it comes to fractions, they learn that 1/2 of a sandwich should really produce two parts that are the same size.
So, the purpose of this blog is to help parents think about everyday things they can do to help their little ones get a "head start." As I go along, I really want to continue through Pre-Calculus topics, so this could really last a while!
